Bali Beyond the South: Tourism Ministry Eyes East Bali Growth

Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism is currently exploring the tourism potential in East Bali to support the equitable development of the tourism sector in Bali Province.

“Bali is not just in the south, but also has the east and north that we need to strengthen the development,” said Deputy Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa as quoted in the ministry’s press release in Jakarta on Monday, 10 March 2025.

To map out the tourism potential in East Bali, Ni Luh Puspa visited several locations in Karangasem on Saturday, March 8, including the Samsara Living Museum, Tirta Gangga, Puri Agung Karangasem, and the Tenganan Pegringsingan Tourist Village.

She believes that Karangasem holds significant potential for developing both natural and cultural tourism.

Local Collaboration to Develop East Bali

At the Samsara Living Museum, Ni Luh Puspa participated in various tourist activities, such as listening to Pratiti readings, observing the traditional lak-lak cake-making process, learning how to make herbal medicines, and watching the creation of literary works from lontar leaves.

Meanwhile, at Puri Agung Karangasem, she listened to the aspirations and challenges faced by local governments and tourism destination managers. In the Tenganan Pegringsingan Village, the Deputy Minister observed firsthand how the local community manages tourism potential while maintaining their traditions and culture.

“I visited Tenganan Pegringsingan Village to see how tourism can coexist with nature and the local community without sacrificing traditions and culture. This is an example that should be emulated and applied elsewhere,” she said. “I think there are many things we need to work together on with the newly elected regent, who has a big vision for advancing tourism,” Ni Luh added.

“This is also in line with the President’s vision of building from the village. Let’s work together to develop Karangasem’s tourism so that the benefits can be felt by the community,” she concluded.

Karangasem Regent I Gusti Putu Parwata (Gus Par) welcomed the visit of Deputy Minister Ni Luh Puspa. He hopes that the equitable distribution of tourism can be realized soon, making Karangasem a more attractive destination for tourists.

According to BaliNews.id, “This is good news for us because Karangasem’s tourism potential is huge and can be developed further. We will also immediately communicate with the central government regarding tourism development in Karangasem,” said Gus Par.

Deputy Minister Ni Luh Puspa’s visit was accompanied by Dwi Marhen Yono, Assistant Deputy for Tourism Facility and Accessibility Development for Region II of the Indonesian Ministry of Tourism.
