Indonesia’s Climbers Undergo Intensive Training Ahead of World Cup in Bali

With less than a month to go until the 2025 IFSC Climbing World Cup, preparations at the Peninsula Island venue in Nusa Dua, Bali, are reaching the final stages.

Climbing wall installation and venue enhancements are currently underway, demonstrating Indonesia’s full commitment through the Indonesian Climbing Federation (FPTI) to hosting the world’s top climbers.

The international event is set to take place on May 3–4, 2025, and will feature competitions in two disciplines: lead and speed. FPTI Secretary General Wahyu Pristiawan Buntoro confirmed that the wall installation is expected to be completed shortly.

According to AntaraNews, “By Wednesday (April 16, 2025), God willing, the wall installation will be complete. So, preparations are nearly done; it’s just a matter of execution now. We are ready to welcome the world’s best climbers,” he said.

International Success

FPTI is using a knock-down climbing wall system, previously utilized during the 2022 World Cup series in Jakarta. This modular system allows for more efficient setup and transportation.

Unlike previous editions, which were all held in Jakarta, Bali has been chosen as the host city for the first time, with full backing from the Bali Provincial Government. Bali Governor I Wayan Koster expressed his commitment to supporting the event during a meeting with FPTI officials.

This strong support is driven by the recent international success of Indonesian climbers highlighted by a gold medal in the 2024 Paris Olympics and the presence of Bali-born climbing star Desak Made Rita Kusuma Dewi.

According to Azairus Adlu, Head of Public Relations and Media at FPTI, Indonesia’s top climbers are currently undergoing intensive national training camps.

According to Kompas.id, “Several elite athletes, including those with international achievements, are currently in training, focusing on refining their techniques, strategies, as well as improving physical and mental endurance,” Azairus said.

He also mentioned that FPTI has brought in a team of coaches and sports psychologists to ensure the athletes are in peak condition.

“We are conducting regular evaluations with our coaching team and sports psychologists to make sure the athletes are at their best when they compete in Bali,” he added.

Indonesia will field some of its strongest athletes, including Rajiah Salsabillah and Veddriq Leonardo, the latter having secured a gold medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The participation of Desak as a hometown representative is also expected to energize both the athletes and the local Balinese community in supporting this prestigious event.

“We are optimistic that hosting the event will further boost the morale of our athletes and motivate them to perform at their highest level and bring pride to the nation on the global stage,” Azairus emphasized.

“We also invite all Indonesians to support and help ensure the success of this prestigious championship.”

This leg of the competition marks the final stop in the three-part IFSC Climbing World Cup Asia Tour, following earlier events in Keqiao and Wujiang, China.

Indonesia has previously hosted the World Cup three times, all in Jakarta. Bali will be the first location outside of Java, representing a milestone moment for Indonesian sport climbing.
