Denpasar is set to host the 18th edition of the prestigious Bali International Film Festival (Balinale), scheduled to take place from June 1–7, 2025.
This annual celebration of cinema will be held at two main venues: Mall Icon Bali and The Meru Hotel in the Sanur area.
The announcement was made by Balinale Founder Deborah Gabineti during a meeting with Denpasar Deputy Mayor I Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa at the Denpasar City Hall on Monday, May 26, 2025.
During the meeting, Deborah revealed that around 60 films are expected to be screened at the festival.
According to RRI, “Approximately 60 films, including short films and documentaries, will be selected based on their storylines, narrative flow, details, messages, and the impact they can create for audiences. So far, about 1,500 films from 35 countries have been submitted for curation at Balinale 2025,” she explained.
She went on to highlight the positive impact of previous Balinale editions, particularly in boosting tourism to Bali and Denpasar.
“The impact is significant as it relates to other connected industries. For example, the film Eat, Pray, Love from 2010 continues to resonate today, attracting people to visit Bali. Films can create a ripple effect,” Deborah added.
Since its inception in 2007, Balinale has consistently featured a diverse range of films, including short films, documentaries, narratives, and experimental works. Each year, filmmakers from around the world submit their work, and approximately 60 to 80 selected films are showcased during the festival.
Deborah also emphasized that Balinale’s international recognition is made possible through strong partnerships with global institutions.
According to Baliviralnews, “Balinale also collaborates with the Hong Kong International Film Festival, Berlinale Spotlight Generation, Asia Pacific Screen Awards, Asian Film Commissions Network, and The Juilliard School,” she said.
She also acknowledged the support of key partners such as the Asian Film Awards Academy, Motion Picture Association, American Film Showcase, and Sundance Institute Film Forward.
Deputy Mayor I Kadek Agus Arya Wibawa expressed strong support for the festival, which aligns with Denpasar’s vision to foster creative and digital economies alongside tourism.
“We should be grateful that Denpasar has hosted such an initiative for over a decade. Many other regions dream of having their own international film festival,” he stated.
