Bali is currently rocking the lowest poverty rate in Indonesia, just 3.72% as of March 2025, with around 173 thousand people still below the poverty line.
Coming in the 2nd place as province with the lowest poverty rate is South Kalimantan at 3.84% and 172 thousand folks living in poverty. And closing out the top three? Jakarta with 4.28% poverty rate and about 465 thousand residents struggling financially.
“Compared to other provinces in Indonesia, Bali has reason to be proud. Overall development has been inclusive, accompanied by a decrease in poverty levels. As a result, most of the community, including those living in poverty, are now able to enjoy the benefits of development,” said the Head of Bali Statistics Agency, Agus Gede Hendrayana Hermawan, in an official release on Friday, July 25, 2025.
Unequal Economic Growth
Bali’s poverty rate decreased by 0.08 percentage points compared to 3.80 percent in September 2024. However, this figure has not yet returned to its pre-pandemic low of 3.61 percent in September 2019.
Meanwhile, Highlands Papua is the province with the highest poverty rate, reaching 30.03%. Central Papua follows with 28.90% poverty, and West Papua with 20.66%.
Provinces in eastern Indonesia dominate the list of provinces with the highest poverty rates, reflecting the unequal distribution of development and economic growth, which is still concentrated in the western region.
