North Bali International Airport, which will be built in Buleleng, has been planned since 2015. On Wednesday, September 24, 2025, the airport’s management finally unveiled the development design, which adopts the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana.
The philosophy of Tri Hita Karana emphasizes harmony between humans and God, humans and fellow humans, and humans and nature. The hope is that this new airport will not only serve as a modern gateway to Bali, but also as a space that lives and breathes with local wisdom.
“We’ve translated the Tri Hita Karana philosophy into spatial planning, material usage, and integration with the natural landscape of North Bali. That way, every passenger arriving or departing will immediately feel the spirit of Bali,” said Erwanto Sad Adiatmoko, CEO of PT BIBU Panji Sakti, the company managing the new airport.

Bedawang Nala and Bhurloka
So what does the design of the new Bali airport look like? Erwanto explained that the airport was designed by Alien Design Consultant (Alien DC), a firm with an extensive track record both domestically and internationally. The concept combines modern, futuristic, and high-tech elements while remaining rooted in Balinese identity.
According to Hardyanthony Wiratama, Managing Director of Alien DC, the shape of the new Bali airport is inspired by Bedawang Nala, the giant turtle in Balinese mythology that supports the universe, and Bhurloka as the core of the building.

The terminal is designed to be environmentally friendly, featuring renewable energy systems, natural ventilation, and green integration that highlights harmony with the mountainous and coastal landscape of Buleleng.
The airport is projected to accommodate more than 20 million passengers per year, and will serve as an international connectivity hub supporting tourism, trade, and even national food security.
In the model, the airport features 26 terminal gates and 2 runways, each 3,600 meters long, ready to serve wide-body aircraft such as the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777.
In the interior area, a courtyard or open garden is being prepared as a green space. The airport is also designed as a public space, featuring transit areas accessible by LRT and buses, as well as performance art facilities such as Kecak dance shows.
