The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has urged residents and coastal communities in Bali to remain vigilant against the potential threat of tidal flooding, also known as banjir rob, predicted to occur between October 7 and 11, 2025.
According to the BMKG, five coastal areas are most at risk: Gianyar, Kuta, Tabanan, Klungkung, and Karangasem. The agency warned that tidal flooding could disrupt daily activities in these regions, particularly around harbors and settlements near the shoreline.
“In general, this phenomenon may impact community activities around ports and coastal areas,” said Cahyo Nugroho, Head of the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Regional Office III in Denpasar, on Wednesday (10/01/2025), as quoted by Antara.
BMKG explained that the phenomenon is linked to two astronomical events: the full moon phase on Monday, October 6, and the perigee phase—the point when the moon is closest to Earth—on October 7, 2025.
These overlapping events can significantly increase maximum sea levels, raising the risk of tidal flooding in coastal zones. However, the agency did not provide detailed estimates of wave or tide heights, as the impact may vary across different coastal areas.
Impacted Community Activities
BMKG highlighted that the potential coastal flooding may disrupt:
- Loading and unloading activities at ports
- Coastal residential settlements
- Salt farming operations
- Land-based aquaculture and fisheries activities
The agency also noted that the timing and severity of tidal flooding may differ depending on location and time of day.
In light of the risk, BMKG has called on residents, local businesses, and fishermen to stay alert and take precautionary measures to minimize disruption.
“We urge the public to remain cautious and prepared to anticipate the impacts of maximum sea-level rise, while continuing to monitor BMKG’s latest updates,” Nugroho emphasized.
Residents are encouraged to access real-time weather and maritime forecasts through BMKG’s official websites bbmkg3.bmkg.go.id and maritim.bmkg.go.id. Updates are also available via BMKG Bali’s Instagram account @bmkgbali and the Info BMKG app.
Ongoing Coastal Challenges in Bali
The warning highlights Bali’s ongoing vulnerability to natural hazards such as tidal flooding and coastal erosion, particularly in areas with dense tourism activities like Kuta and Gianyar. Local authorities are expected to work with communities to ensure preparedness, including securing property, adjusting port schedules, and safeguarding livelihoods dependent on coastal resources.
As Bali prepares for peak tides this October, residents are reminded to stay informed and exercise caution. Simple preventive measures—such as avoiding unnecessary activity near vulnerable coastal zones and following local advisories—can help minimize risks.
BMKG continues to monitor conditions and has assured the public that updates will be provided regularly to support safety and preparedness.
