Kuta Police Boost Patrols After Arresting Pickpockets Targeting Tourists

Kuta Police have successfully arrested two pickpockets who frequently target foreigners in Bali.

The arrests followed a report filed by Australian national Damian Troy Rowe (46), who claimed his wallet—containing approximately IDR 20 million in cash—was stolen in front of a minimarket on Jalan Benesari, Kuta, early Monday (October 6th).

“The two perpetrators pretended to ask the victim for cigarettes. Then, one of the perpetrators took the opportunity to take the wallet from the victim’s pocket. Based on the investigation and information gathered in the field, the team was able to identify the perpetrators and arrest them without resistance,” stated Kuta Police Chief, Commissioner Agus Riwayanto Diputra, on Wednesday (October 8th).

Following an intensive investigation, the suspects—identified as DUS (43) and AL (44)—were arrested on Tuesday evening (October 7th) on Jalan Gunung Salak, West Denpasar.

Both pickpocket suspects have been secured at the Kuta Police Station to undergo further legal proceedings

Commissioner Agus revealed that both individuals had committed similar offenses in the Seminyak and Padma areas of Kuta, using a consistent modus operandi: initiating casual interaction before stealing from unsuspecting victims. DUS reportedly wore an online motorcycle taxi jacket to conceal his identity.

“Both admitted that the proceeds of their crimes were used for daily needs and family medical expenses. However, investigators are still investigating to uncover the possibility of other networks,” Commissioner Agus added.

Authorities seized several items as evidence, including IDR 2.6 million in cash, a black t-shirt, a brown hat, and the red Yamaha Mio motorcycle allegedly used during the crime.

Commissioner Agus also issued a public reminder, particularly to tourists, to remain cautious and avoid carrying large sums of cash while traveling.

“We will continue to increase patrols and police presence in crime-prone areas in tourist areas. Kuta must remain safe and comfortable for everyone,” Agus concluded.
