Indonesia Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Bali has raised concerns over the increasing number of foreign nationals living in rented houses and boarding rooms across the island.
The chamber warns that, if left unchecked, this trend could threaten the sustainability of local micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Kadin Bali Chairman I Made Ariandi revealed that several groups of foreigners holding specific visa categories possess substantial capital and are allegedly engaging in covert business activities in sectors traditionally dominated by local MSMEs.
“This has become a serious concern for us. In Canggu, there have already been calls to restrict foreigners from staying in boarding houses, and similar measures are starting to emerge in Karangasem,” Ariandi said before attending the Karangasem Regency Chamber Conference on Friday (November 7, 2025).
According to Ariandi, some of these foreigners hold ‘gold’ visas and are suspected of misusing their permits to conduct business.
“They have strong financial capacity and exploit visa loopholes. Some are even believed to be running illegal businesses. This situation clearly poses a threat to local MSMEs,” he stressed.
The Chamber is urging local governments to establish clear and firm regulations to prevent potential market domination by foreign entrepreneurs and protect local businesses.
“We expect regional authorities to issue decisive policies so that local MSMEs can continue to grow without facing unfair competition,” Ariandi said.
During the Karangasem Chamber Conference, Budi Hartawan was re-elected as Chairman of the Karangasem Chamber of Commerce. He expressed gratitude for the continued trust placed in him.
“As directed by the Bali Chamber leadership, our focus will be to revitalize and strengthen MSMEs in Karangasem to further drive regional economic growth,” Budi said.
