The Special Committee on Spatial Planning, Assets, and Licensing of the Bali Regional House of Representatives has not only shut down the glass elevator project at Kelingking Beach, Nusa Penida, Klungkung Regency, but also suspended all bungee jumping activities at the nearby Extreme Park.
The decision followed findings of alleged violations of spatial regulations and safety standards. Chairman of the Special Committee, I Made Supartha, said the extreme tourism activity posed serious danger due to its location on a cliff with fragile geological conditions.
“It’s really extreme. The activity is right on the edge of a cliff, and the investor is Russian. Visibly, the cliff contours are already cracked and prone to landslides. Moreover, the area is often hit by strong winds,” Supartha said on Tuesday (November 11, 2025).
Supartha also addressed reports claiming that operators had continued to run the bungee attraction despite the closure order. He confirmed that the operation has now been completely shut down.
According to CNA, “They only finished the existing bookings on the second day. Maybe a few more jumps, and then it was closed again. As of now, it remains shut down,” he explained.
Nusa Penida Must Be Protected
Furthermore, Supartha emphasized the importance of preserving Nusa Penida’s ecological and spiritual integrity, noting that the island serves as a natural barrier and sacred area for Bali.
“Nusa Penida is the guardian of Bali. Its cliffs are natural fortresses, just like the southern Pecatu area. Geographically, this island is unique and sacred — it must be appreciated and protected,” he asserted.
He added that excessive exploitation of the region could damage the delicate natural balance that defines Bali’s global tourism appeal.
Recommendations Submitted to the Governor
Meanwhile, Chairman of Bali Regional House of Representatives, Dewa Made Mahayadnya said the council has submitted an official recommendation to Governor I Wayan Koster concerning the glass elevator and bungee jumping projects, which involve foreign investors.
The submission was made in a closed meeting, and it remains unclear whether the two projects will be temporarily halted or permanently dismantled.
“The committee agreed to submit the results confidentially to the Governor. He mentioned that there would be a surprise announcement later when the time comes. I don’t think it will take long,” Supartha said.
Meanwhile, Mahayadnya added that both projects are now under evaluation by the Bali Provincial Government.
“Whether they will continue or be terminated, we’re waiting for the governor’s decision,” he said.
Bali Welcomes Investors
Governor I Wayan Koster stated that his administration will carefully review all investigation documents submitted by the Bali Regional House of Representatives before making a final decision. He hinted that a “surprise” would follow regarding the fate of the two controversial attractions.
“The government will proceed carefully. I want to emphasize that Bali is not anti-investor, but what we need are investors who comply with regulations and respect nature,” said the politician of Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle.
