After trade activities were halted due to a fire in 2024, the Ubud Thematic Market area is set to resume operations at the end of February 2026.
To neutralize the negative aura of the previous incident, Gianyar’s local government held a Tawur Balik Sumpah ceremony and Melaspas ritual on Monday (February 16, 2026).
Head of Gianyar Regency’s Department of Industry and Trade, Anak Agung Gde Raka Suryadiputra, explained on Tuesday (February 17) that the ritual is not merely tradition, but a symbol of revival.
“Through this melaspas ceremony, we pray for well-being so that the Ubud Thematic Tourist Market once again provides a sense of safety and comfort for traders and visitors, while marking the beginning of recovery after the fire disaster,” said Agung Suryadiputra.
Reviving the Economy in Ubud
The fire at Ubud’s Thematic Market occurred in August 2024. According to local media reports at the time, around 400 traders’ stalls were destroyed, along with several vehicles that could not be saved.
During the melaspas ritual, Agung Suryadiputra explained that the Gianyar local government had gradually carried out physical restructuring and land clearing. In addition, they are committed to strengthening facilities to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Agung also added that reopening the Ubud Thematic Market aims to revive the people’s economy. Market facilities have been reinforced to ensure it remains a magnet for both domestic and international tourists.
“We hope trading activities will soon recover and the community’s economic wheels will start turning again,” Agung emphasized.
