Bali’s Les Village Wins Best Tourism Village Award

The village of Les in Tejakula, North Bali, has received the best tourism village award at the Indonesia Tourism Village Award (ADWI) 2024, which was presented at the Teater Tanah Airku, Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, Jakarta, on Sunday (17/11/24,) according to reporting from Tempo.

Minister of Tourism Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said in her address that ADWI 2024 carries the theme of Divine Tourism Towards Classy World Green Tourism. “This is part of our grand vision for tourism villages to grow into self-sustaining tourism villages and compete globally.”

She added that the tourism village awards aim to increase visits to tourism villages by up to 30 percent per year, thereby becoming an economic growth accelerator.

Les is the only tourism village in Bali that made it to the top 50 of ADWI 2024. Located in Tejakula, in the regency of Buleleng, the village of Les is situated between the sea and the mountains, and has two waterfalls namely Yeh Mampeh Waterfall and Yeh Anakan in Selonding. Moreover, this village in northern Bali is also a diving destination due to its beautiful coral reefs, says Tempo.

However, it’s not only the tourism potential that earned Les the title of best tourism village. ADWI 2024 Jury Chairman Ari Suhandi said that Les excelled in all assessment categories, especially because they collaborated with several local and international universities.

“They take coral reef monitoring seriously, then they collaborate with an institution for coral reef restoration, also establish mother groups to obtain financial benefits,” said Ari after the award presentation.

Ari added that another advantage of this tourism village is its traditionally produced salt. The salt from this village is called palungan salt because the production process uses drying fields in the form of palungan or coconut tree trunks.

“The salt production has become a tourist attraction, and the salt produced is exported to Japan,” said Ari.

Tempo reports that ADWI 2024 also awarded dozens of other tourism villages in various categories. This year, 6,016 tourism villages registered and were then selected in stages involving 13 independent juries. The initial phase filtered villages to the top 500, then 300, and 100, until finally selecting the 50 Best Tourism Villages in 2024.
