Plans to launch a fast boat route from Banyuwangi to Denpasar, Bali, are expected to begin operations this June, with hopes of stimulating tourism between the two regions.
However, Denpasar Mayor I Gusti Ngurah Jaya Negara revealed that the Denpasar city government has not been formally involved in the initiative.
According to Kompas.com, “Until now, there has been no discussion or official cooperation agreement with the Denpasar government, even though the destination port is located in our area,” said Jaya Negara.
He added that despite a mention of the project during the APEKSI event in Surabaya by the Governor of Bali and her deputy, no further communication or formal agreement has been made.
Jaya also noted that the city has not received any direct information from the boat operator or relevant authorities, including clarity on which port in Denpasar would be used.
“We’re still waiting. So far, there has been no direct conversation with us,” he emphasized.
Meanwhile, the route is expected to connect Marina Boom Port in Banyuwangi with Serangan Island in Denpasar, using a vessel that can carry up to 300 passengers. The service is projected to start in June 2025.
East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa, along with Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani, inspected the readiness of Marina Boom Port in early April.
“Ahead of operations, I wanted to ensure the infrastructure is ready. The operator will return to check what else is needed,” Khofifah said. She also urged that the port’s design reflect Banyuwangi’s cultural identity, especially in the passenger waiting areas.
Regent Ipuk echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the importance of local character in public transport infrastructure. She believes the new route will not only strengthen Banyuwangi’s role in logistics and transportation but also enhance its appeal to tourists.
“From a tourism perspective, this is highly beneficial because visitors will have more travel options with shorter travel times,” she explained.
East Java Acting Governor Emil Elestianto Dardak supported the initiative, stating that the route holds great potential for mutual benefit.
“I believe this route will be very profitable for both sides,” said Emil in Surabaya, responding to Jaya Negara’s earlier remarks.
He highlighted the strategic location of the Denpasar docking point, which offers fast access to Bali’s tourist destinations, while also making it easier for Bali residents to explore Banyuwangi.
Antaranews reports, “This route will significantly cut travel time and help ease congestion at the Gilimanuk–Ketapang crossing. God willing, it will be a game-changer for both regions,” he added.
Responding to Denpasar’s concerns, Emil clarified that the collaboration process is still under internal review by Denpasar City, focusing on administrative and technical considerations.
“As the mayor mentioned, he is following the process. That means he’s not unaware, but is currently examining the necessary steps,” Emil explained.
For now, the Denpasar government remains cautious, reiterating that no official agreements or detailed discussions particularly about port designation, have taken place.
“Even though this was mentioned during our visit to Surabaya, there’s still no cooperation signed, despite the port being located in our area,” said Jaya Negara.
