Deputy Chair of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Syaiful Huda, has urged both the central and regional governments to heighten vigilance as Tropical Cyclone 93S continues to strengthen.
The weather phenomenon is predicted to have a significant impact on parts of Java and Bali, coinciding with the extended year-end holiday period in 2025.
Huda emphasized that disaster preparedness must be prioritized, particularly in densely populated areas and popular tourist destinations, to prevent casualties amid increased public and tourist mobility during the holiday season.
“We hope that all parties will be alert to the strengthening of Cyclone 93S in several areas in Java and Bali in the near future. The government needs to monitor developments more intensively and prepare strategies to anticipate hydrometeorological disasters.” Huda said in Jakarta on Thursday (18/12/2025).
According to Huda, tourist destinations such as Bali require special attention in disaster management. Given Bali’s frequent exposure to international scrutiny, any disaster occurring in the region could have wide-ranging implications.
He therefore called on the government to go beyond standard warnings and introduce innovative ways of communicating weather information to the public.
“These include easy-to-understand real-time extreme weather warnings, integration of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency’s warnings into tourism applications, and marking of hazard zones at tourist destinations,” he said.
Furthermore, Commission V also warned that extreme weather conditions could disrupt transportation systems, including airport and seaport closures, slippery road conditions, and an increased risk of landslides.
Nature-based tourism sites such as beaches, mountains, rivers, and waterfalls were identified as the most vulnerable locations during a cyclone event.
Huda also issued a direct appeal to travelers to remain rational when planning their trips. Tourists were advised not to force travel plans if weather conditions at their destinations fall within high-risk zones.
“Do not force yourself to travel if the destination is high risk. Make a backup plan so that your vacation remains enjoyable and safe for yourself and your family. Remember, no vacation is worth your life.” he concluded. (E-3)
