Cyclone 93S Intensifies Ahead of Year‑End Holidays in Java and Bali

Deputy Chair of Commission V of the Indonesian House of Representatives, Syaiful Huda, has urged both the central and regional governments to heighten vigilance as Tropical Cyclone 93S continues to strengthen.

The weather phenomenon is predicted to have a significant impact on parts of Java and Bali, coinciding with the extended year-end holiday period in 2025.

Huda emphasized that disaster preparedness must be prioritized, particularly in densely populated areas and popular tourist destinations, to prevent casualties amid increased public and tourist mobility during the holiday season.

“We hope that all parties will be alert to the strengthening of Cyclone 93S in several areas in Java and Bali in the near future. The government needs to monitor developments more intensively and prepare strategies to anticipate hydrometeorological disasters.” Huda said in Jakarta on Thursday (18/12/2025).

According to Huda, tourist destinations such as Bali require special attention in disaster management. Given Bali’s frequent exposure to international scrutiny, any disaster occurring in the region could have wide-ranging implications.

He therefore called on the government to go beyond standard warnings and introduce innovative ways of communicating weather information to the public.

“These include easy-to-understand real-time extreme weather warnings, integration of Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysical Agency’s warnings into tourism applications, and marking of hazard zones at tourist destinations,” he said.

Furthermore, Commission V also warned that extreme weather conditions could disrupt transportation systems, including airport and seaport closures, slippery road conditions, and an increased risk of landslides.

Nature-based tourism sites such as beaches, mountains, rivers, and waterfalls were identified as the most vulnerable locations during a cyclone event.

Huda also issued a direct appeal to travelers to remain rational when planning their trips. Tourists were advised not to force travel plans if weather conditions at their destinations fall within high-risk zones.

“Do not force yourself to travel if the destination is high risk. Make a backup plan so that your vacation remains enjoyable and safe for yourself and your family. Remember, no vacation is worth your life.” he concluded. (E-3)

State of Preparedness

Meanwhile, Central Java and Bali are among the provinces expected to experience heavy rainfall due to Tropical Cyclone 93S. The Central Java Regional Disaster Management Agency stated that it has entered a state of preparedness to face the potential impacts.

“Central Java Regional Disaster Management Agency Monitors and disseminates information from the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency to vulnerable areas. (As well as) Conducting educational communication and disseminating information related to potential disasters.” said Head of the agency, Bergas Catursasi Penangguhan, to reporters on Thursday (18/12/2025).

In addition, the agency has been conducting disaster response drills and simulations in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, volunteers, and local communities.

River cleaning activities are also being undertaken as part of flood mitigation efforts. Preparation of personnel, infrastructure, information, and flood relief materials. Areas for river cleaning. Bergas said.

In Bali, Head of Operations at the Bali Chapter of Regional Disaster Management Agency, I Gede Agung Teja Bhusana Yadnya, acknowledged the potential for the 93S disturbance to develop into a tropical cyclone. The agency is therefore coordinating with multiple stakeholders to maintain a high level of readiness.

“Ensuring that all sectors are prepared to face potential disasters. Consolidation has been carried out with relevant agencies.” said I Gede Agung.

Regional Disaster Management Agency in Bali has also implemented 24-hour monitoring in areas prone to heavy rainfall. “(Also ensuring) the readiness of equipment and logistics. All of this is done to be on standby to assist districts and cities in the event of a disaster. he explained.

He added that flood mitigation measures have already been carried out, including ensuring proper drainage function.

Previously, the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency explained that the tropical disturbance associated with Cyclone 93S began forming on 11 December 2025 at 07:00 WIB, and is currently located in the Indian Ocean south of East Java.

Potential impacts include moderate to heavy rainfall across Central Java, Yogyakarta, East Java, Bali, West Nusa Tenggara, and western parts of East Nusa Tenggara. Strong winds may affect the southern coastal areas from West Java to Bali, while moderate sea conditions with wave heights of 1.25–2.5 meters are expected in the southern Indian Ocean waters from Banten to Sumba Island.
