Apple has launched a new digital talent training program in Indonesia with the opening of its latest Apple Developer Academy in Tuban, Bali.
Susan Prescott, Vice President of Worldwide Developer Relations at Apple, stated that the new academy will accommodate more than 100 students in its first class. The program aims to equip participants with the necessary skills for the iOS industry.
According to Kumparan, “Coding is a great way to gain global recognition, and the Apple Developer Academy will help more people in Indonesia bring their ideas to life,” Susan Prescott said in an official statement.
Susan explained that Apple wants to support Indonesia’s app developer community, which has already produced many successful works. The participants of the academy will be trained to build businesses and create a positive impact on their communities.
This nine-month training program covers basic coding, design, marketing, and insights into artificial intelligence. Participants of various ages, ranging from 18 to 56 years old, will take part in the inaugural class.
Apple is recruiting participants from 32 cities across Indonesia, with the largest number coming from Bali. Although this is the fourth academy, the Apple Developer Academy in Bali is the first in Indonesia to accept international students from 11 countries.
Marry Kusuma, a native of Bali, is one of the participants in the Apple Developer Academy in Tuban. Her career as a technology consultant was halted by the pandemic. She transitioned to an online home business but continued to nurture her passion for technology.
As reported by Tempo.co, Marry said, “It’s an incredible opportunity for me to not only learn new skills but also interact with other students.”
Part of Apple’s Investment in Indonesia
The Apple Developer Academy is a training program for iOS app development that has been available in Indonesia since 2018. It collaborates with local higher education institutions such as Binus in BSD, Ciputra University in Surabaya, and Infinite Learning in Batam.
To date, more than 2,500 developers have completed the program, with 90% of graduates securing jobs in various sectors, including education, e-commerce, and transportation.
I Wayan Agus Hery Setiawan is an alumnus of the Apple Developer Academy in Surabaya. Now he works at a hospital. After attending the academy in 2022, he successfully developed an app that reduces patient waiting times at the hospital.
“Being at the academy taught me the importance of not just focusing on technology, but also tackling fundamental challenges,” Agus said.
Career Opportunities in the iOS Industry
According to the Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, Apple’s Innovation Development Scheme investment in Indonesia is valued at USD 160 million. This is approximately Rp 2.62 trillion, based on the exchange rate of Rp 16,380 per USD.
The investment will be paid in cash for the 2026-2028 period. Additionally, the Ministry of Industry is processing the TKDN certificate for Apple. It is expected to be issued during Ramadan 2025.
Previously, Minister Agus explained that there had been extensive negotiations to encourage Apple to establish a research and development (RnD) center in Indonesia. Apple has only one RnD center outside the United States, located in Brazil.
The construction of the RnD center in Indonesia will make it the second RnD center globally and the first in Asia. The RnD center in Indonesia is expected to involve major universities, including ITB, UI, UGM, and ITS.
