Antara News is reporting that the electricity supply on Bali has almost returned to normal following a power blackout on Friday afternoon that affected public facilities and the operation of the tourism island’s airport, according to an official.
The Bali provincial authority, quoting state electricity company PLN, reported that the blackout affected 80 percent of the province.
PLN’s Executive Vice President of Corporate Communications & TJSL Gregorius Adi Trianto stated that the company deployed hundreds of personnel to address the blackout in the island province, which was reported to have occurred at 4 p.m. local time.
He added that the electricity supply “at hospitals, the airport, seaports, and public centers has recovered,” and assured that power would be fully restored in Bali on Friday (2/5/25.)
As of 7:30 p.m., power supply to over 940,000 affected residents in Bali had been gradually restored. “The gradual recovery is occurring across the affected regions,” he said.
While an investigation into the cause of the blackout is underway, Trianto noted that early indications suggest a likely disruption in the Java-Bali undersea electricity interconnection cable system, says Antara News.
Separately, the general manager of Bali’s I Gusti Ngurah Rai Airport, Ahmad Syaugi Shahab, confirmed that the electricity supply has been restored at the airport. “All arrival and departure processes have returned to normal,” the airport manager affirmed.
Antara News reports that the airport utilized its backup electric generator to maintain operations during the blackout. Some flights experienced delays while the airport operator activated the backup system.
He stated that fortunately, the backup generator functioned normally and had sufficient fuel.
Governor I Wayan Koster has directed the relevant authorities to expedite the recovery process, warning that the blackout must not extend to Saturday (3/5/25,), when Balinese Hindus celebrate Kuningan Day.
The province is also hosting the International Federation of Sport Climbing (IFSC) World Cup in the Nusa Dua region from May 2 to 4. The provincial authority confirmed that the power supply to the site has been restored.
