Association of Hotel and Restaurant in Indonesia recorded an average hotel room occupancy rate of 80% in Bali during the period marking the 81st anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia’s independence.

“Tourist visits have been relatively stable; occupancy rates this August are excellent across both star-rated and non-star (budget) hotels, with the current average in Bali reaching nearly 80 percent,” said I Gusti Ngurah Rai Suryawijaya, Deputy Chairman of the Association Bali Chapter, following the 81st Independence Day ceremony in Denpasar on Monday.

He explained that high occupancy was predominantly seen in star-rated hotels, signaling a continued recovery in Bali’s tourism sector as the nation marks another year of independence.

According to him, the prevalence of tourists staying in star-rated hotels indicates strong purchasing power among visitors to the “Island of the Gods,” suggesting that the goal of attracting high-spending, quality tourists is beginning to materialize.

“The fact that so many tourists are staying in star-rated hotels implies high purchasing power; it means the visitors arriving are high spenders, not low-budget travelers,” Rai said.

Data from the the Association Bali Chapter shows that the Sanur area recorded the highest occupancy rate, nearing 90 percent, followed by Badung Regency at 80 percent and Ubud at around 70 percent.

Badung Regency remains the primary barometer for Bali’s tourism industry, accounting for 71 percent of the island’s total hotel room inventory of 160,000 units. Amidst positive occupancy figures, he added, the momentum of Indonesia’s 81st Independence Day is also serving as an opportunity to evaluate progress toward the centenary of Bali tourism in 2027.

The Indonesian Hotel and Restaurant Association emphasizes the importance of realizing a vision for tourism that is culture-based, high-quality, and dignified; this requires strict oversight, serious enforcement of regulations, and intensive outreach to prevent misunderstandings on the ground.

Furthermore, the association highlights the welfare of hotel workers. According to him, the income of tourism workers in Bali does not rely solely on the regency or city minimum wage; it is supplemented by service bonuses ranging from IDR 3 million to IDR 15 million per month, depending on occupancy rates and room prices.
