DENPASAR – The Denpasar city government is actively promoting the development of urban farming based on agrotourism.
This initiative aims to strengthen food security while simultaneously increasing the sustainable economic value for urban communities.
Sagung Antara Jaya Negara, Head of the Denpasar City Family Welfare and Empowerment Movement Team, pointed out the success of a grape cultivation project in the Subak Peraupan Barat area, North Denpasar.
She stated that the existence of a vineyard in the middle of an urban area demonstrates the farmers’ creativity in productively utilizing limited land through the urban farming concept.
“The existence of this vineyard can also be utilized as a pick-your-own grape agrotourism. Furthermore, its harvest can be processed into various derivative products,” stated Sagung Antari Jaya Negara, Chairwoman of TP-PKK Denpasar City.
High-Value Crop and Modern Innovation
The head of the Denpasar City Agriculture Service, Bayu Brahmasta, encourages the use of productive home gardens with economic value to strengthen urban food security.
According to him, grape cultivation has great potential to be developed as a modern agricultural innovation in Denpasar.
The city is supported by warm climatic conditions and sufficient sunlight exposure throughout the year.
As explained by Brahmasta, grapes also have a fairly high economic value, with market prices reaching between 70,000 and 100,000 rupiah per kilogram, depending on the type and quality of the fruit.
Additionally, grapes can bear fruit all season long through proper pruning and care techniques, eliminating the need for replanting after harvest.
“Through this activity, we hope grape cultivation can become an icon for developing urban farming and encourage the creation of modern agriculture that appeals to the younger generation,” he said.
Local Farmer’s Success
The manager of the Subak Peraupan Barat vineyard, Wayan Sudarsana, stated that his farm covers an area of six acres, with about three acres planted with grapes and the remaining with other horticultural crops.
“This vineyard has been active since 2023. Currently, dozens of quality grape varieties have been planted,” he said.
He added that grape harvesting can be done up to three times a year, with this harvest expected to yield between 10 to 15 kilograms of grapes.
